Abstract
638,653. Preparing peat. CROSS, E. Oct. 24, 1947, No. 28515. [Class 50] Fuel blocks are prepared from peat by adding caustic alkali to raw peat, kneading the mixture, forming it into blocks and drying it. The peat as cut is fed into an auger machine, which may be gently heated, of the type used for brick making. Caustic soda solution to about half the quantity required for neutralization of the peat acidity, is added and mixed with the peat in the machine, which extrudes the mixture through a shaping nozzle, and preferably through a length of canvas hose, some of the water escaping through the walls of the hose. The extruded mass is cut into lengths, stacked and dried. Peat mould, coal dust, sawdust or the like may be added during the mixing process.
