[Class 7 (vi)] A valve operating cam having an effective lifting portion DE is designed with an opening ramp CD, in which tappet clearance is taken up, consisting of a small accelerating portion OG on the lift curve Fig. 5, a part GH consisting of the negative half period of a sine curve plotted on the sloping straight line GH, and a part HX, consisting of the positive quarter period of a sine curve plotted on a sloping straight line HJ, which merges into a constant velocity portion XY. The effect of the design is that at the end of the ramp the velocity of lift is kept very small. The cam is provided with a similar closing ramp EF. Specifications 629,500 and 629,629 are referred to.
