Abstract
A process for the manufacture of refined aluminium from raw materials containing aluminium metal together with other elements comprises preparing a salt melt containing an aluminium trihalide, e.g., the trichloride, contacting this melt with the raw material, e.g., at a temperature of above 300 DEG C or near or even above the melting point of aluminium, thereby causing an aluminium subhalide to be formed by reaction between aluminium and aluminium trihalide, removing the melt from contact with the raw material and lowering the temperature to cause separation of aluminium metal. Aluminium may be separated in solid form while the melt remains fluid. The melt may contain also a halide of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal. The materials treated may be commercial aluminium or aluminium alloys or aluminium scrap.
