Abstract
627,896. Heating and cooling gases. HEAT EXCHANGERS, Ltd., and TOOGOOD, G. D. April 11, 1947, No. 9671. [Class 64(iii)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXVIII] A gas-cleaning heat exchanger 14 is placed between the combustion chamber 5 and the gas turbine 1, and the combustion gases flow around the tubes of the exchanger giving up heat to a stream of air in the tubes. The temperature, pressure or rate of flow of the air is regulated to maintain constant the temperature of the gases reaching the turbine. The air passes through a second heat-exchanger 15 where it gives up its heat to the air flowing in the pipe 9 to the combustion chamber. The air passing through the exchangers 14, 15 is circulated in a closed circuit by a pump 18 and the pressure in that circuit is variable by means of a bleed 21 to the compressor inlet 7 and a bleed 19 from the compressor delivery 8. In an alternative form, the air passing through the exchangers 14, 15 is a part of the compressor delivery and is finally passed to the combustion chamber 5. The air may be passed through a cooler before the exchanger 14. The bundles of tubes in the exchanger 14 are arranged to act as interceptors of ash and other matter carried by the combustion gases and may be removed for cleaning. As shown in Fig. 3, two exchangers 14, 114 are arranged in parallel and one may be in use whilst the tubes of the other are being cleaned.
