Abstract
611,042. Spikes. MILLS, Ltd., EXECUTORS OF J., and MACBETH, A. May 11, 1945, No. 11831. [Class 89 (ii)] Spikes for securing rails or sole plates to sleepers have shanks with two or more legs 2, Fig. 2, and an arm 4 extending to one side to bear resiliently on the rail flange. The shanks may be unequal in length, may converge or diverge towards their free ends, and may be corrugated to increase their hold in the sleepers. The arm may be bent downward instead of being horizontal and the bends 3 may be curled to form horns which alone bear on the flange. The bends may be such that they first extend towards one side of the spikes and are then bent back so that the arm 4 lies on the other side, the spikes being either within or without the arm. The arm may be wider or narrower than the distance between the spikes or may be of angular or curved shape. In another form, arms 4, Fig. 18, may be connected by an upwardly or downwardly displaced part 12. The initial bends may form a slight shoulder at 16, Fig. 22, and the arms 4 may extend at first away from the shoulder, each arm then being bent back on itself to the part 12. When fixing rails without sole plates the shoulders 16 engage the edges of the flange to prevent lateral shift of the rail, whilst the part 12 resiliently bears on the top of the flange. In this form the part 12 may either be wider than or less than the distance between the spikes. Further forms have three spikes either all in one plane or not. Other forms are punched from sheet metal or are bent up from flat strip, if desired folded so that the spikes are laminated.
