Abstract

Fibres, films and other articles of polymers of acrylonitrile are dyed with a dyestuff of the methine series which is free from carboxylic or sulphonic groups, or with the free base of such a dyestuff. The dyeing may be carried out in the presence of an aromatic acid such as anthranilic acid, benzoic acid, sulphanilic acid or 1,8 - aminonaphthol - 3,6 - disulphonic acid. Suitable dyestuffs are those described in Specifications 232,740, [Class 2 (iii)], 353,863, 359,753 and 462,296 and also the dyestuff obtained by condensing 1,3,3 - trimethyl - 2 - methylene - indoline with 1 - methyl - 2 - phenyl-indole-3-aldehyde, and the dyestuff obtained by condensing 1,3,3 - trimethyl - 2 - methylene - indoline - o - aldehyde with 5-amino - 2 - methyl - benzthiazole or 2,4-dimethoxyaniline sulphate.
