Abstract
600,745. Actuating materials. HEYL, G. E. June 13, 1945, No. 14990., [Class 7 (ii)] In an arrangement for supplementing the normal fuel air mixture by hydrogen and oxygen produced in an electrolytic cell connected to the battery dynamo circuit of the engine, the hydrogen and oxygen are filtered in the cell before being mixed with the normal fuel air mixture. In the Figure, an electrolytic cell a, supplied by current from the engine dynamo (not shown), produces gases which pass through a filter f and are collected in a chamber d. From the chamber d a pipe passes either to the intake i of the engine carburetter or the induction pipe at the engine side of the carburetter. The filter may comprise a layer of asbestos or glass wool and if desired may be impregnated with a suitable fuel to enrich the mixture as it passes through it. The electrolyte may be acidulated water or caustic potash or caustic soda solution and iron electrodes may be used with the caustic potash or caustic soda. A regulating resistance and ammeter may be included in the circuit of the cell, the resistance being used to regulate the current. A switch may be included in addition to the usual cut-out to prevent the battery discharging through the cell. The cell may be connected to the dynamo on the engine side of the cut-out and may be in series or parallel with the dynamo. Specification 591,718 is referred to.
