Abstract

Quaternary ammonium compounds in paste form, produced by causing a long-chain acidylamidomethylol compound to interact with a salt of a tertiary base in the presence of said base, in the presence of a liquid diluent containing at least 70 per cent by weight of an aliphatic (including cycloaliphatic) alcohol containing not more than 6 carbon atoms, are dissolved in aqueous treating bath to produce solutions, for use in making textile materials water-repellent, which are less liable to form than those prepared from the solid quaternary ammonium compounds.ALSO:Quaternary ammonium compounds of the type useful for making textile materials waterrepellent and obtained by reacting a long-chain acylamidomethylol compound with a salt of a tertiary base in the presence of said base are manufactured in paste form by carrying out the reaction in the presence of a liquid diluent containing at least 70 per cent by weight of an aliphatic (including cycloaliphatic) alcohol containing not more than 6 carbon atoms. Part of the alcohol to an amount not exceeding 30 per cent by weight may be replaced by other organic solvents, e.g. by liquid petroleum hydrocarbons, acetone or methyl-ethyl ketone. As source of long-chain acylamide, methylolamides from stearic, palmitic and myristic acids may be used, and as salts of tertiary bases, those of pyridine, quinoline, trimethylamine and picolines. In examples, methylol stearamide is condensed with pyridine hydrochloride, or g -methylpyridine hydrochloride in (2), using either concentrated aqueous hydrochloric acid or gaseous hydrogen chloride, in the presence of isopropyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, n-butyl alcohol, tertiary amyl alcohol and cyclohexanol.
