Abstract

599,946. Indicating temperatures. YEATMAN, H. M. (Hansen, K.). Sept. 25, 1945, No. 24840. Drawings to Specification. [Class 40 (i)] In a system for measuring the exhaust temperature of an internal combustion engine a thermopile is arranged with hot junctions inside the exhaust pipe and cold junctions, subject to radiation from the exhaust pipe, near the outside of the exhaust pipe. In the arrangement described thermocouples are sandwiched between asbestos sheets covering a hole in the exhaust pipe of an internal combustion engine. The hot junctions project into the exhaust pipe through holes in the inner sheet of asbestos. The " cold " junctions are located very close to the outside wall of the exhaust pipe. The indications of a milliammeter connected across the thermopile represent exhaust temperatures which are not relative to ambient temperature but which, in the case of compression ignition engines at least, are stated to correspond without lag to engine H.P. and the meter scale may be so graduated. A variable resistance shunt is provided across the meter for adjustment purposes.
