Abstract
596,796. Magnetic recording-devices. ARMOUR RESEARCH FOUNDATION. Jan. 31, 1945, No. 2455. Convention date, Jan. 20, 1944. [Class 40 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXV] In a magnetic recording and reproducing device for steel wire or tape, consisting of a recording head carrying audio-frequency current and an erasing head carrying high-frequency current, the magnet cores are associated in such a manner that a component of the highfrequency current in the erasing head is induced in the recording head during recording. In one form, as shown in Fig. 2, the magnet core is constructed integrally and carries the recording medium 3 in a V-shaped groove. High-frequency current from a source 23 is fed to the coil 21 of the erasing head, and the resulting flux as indicated by the dotted lines 33 partially links with the coil 26 of the recording head as indicated by the path 34. During recording, the switch 25 in the leads 22, 24 connecting the source of high-frequency current 23 is closed, but it is opened during reproduction. In another form, conductors passing transversely through the magnet-gaps may be used instead of coils for the recording and erasing heads, as shown in Fig. 5, and the surface of the core contacting the recording medium may be made arcuate in shape to reduce wear. Erasing heads may be placed on both sides of the recording head with suitable switching so that recording or reproduction may take place in either direction of travel of the medium.
