Abstract
Panels and the like, resembling natural wood are obtained by a process which comprises treating fragmentary wood material with a solution or suspension of a bonding material containing at least a proportion of thermosetting synthetic resin, moulding the treated material to panel form, curing it with the application of heat and under a pressure which is insufficient to close the pores of the treated material and applying to the panel, after cooling and hard setting of the latter, a binding material which penetrates the surface, at least, of the panel so as to render these surfaces non-porous and which forms with the surface layers of the treated material a solid water insoluble coating which substantially increases the mechanical strength of these layers. The wood waste may be wood chips, shavings, or coarse sawdust; wood flour may be used in small quantities but should not predominate. Graded portions from special sources such as walnut wood may be used in order to produce special burred effects. About 10 to 12 per cent. of synthetic resin which may be a phenol-aldehyde resin in alcoholic solution may be used and the mixture moulded at a temperature of about 150 DEG C. at a pressure of 500 to 2200 lbs. per square inch. An accelerator may be added to enable curing to be effected at lower temperatures. Wax may be added either in powder or flake form or in solution to the impregnated material, and it may be added to the thermosetting resin which is used for the initial bonding agent. The final bonding agent may be a thermosetting or thermoplastic resin. Panels may be finished by buffing or grinding and then the surface treated with a lacquer, resin cement or wax. Modified products are obtained by bonding sheets of veneer on the outside or by utilising as an inner layer, cork, wool or felt impregnated with resin, or by reinforcing with wire mesh. The panels may be stained or coloured either during or after manufacture. Curing may be effected by heating between platens, by hot air or by radio frequency currents.
