Abstract
Cellulosic vegetable material is pre-treated with a dilute solution of an acid or an acid salt and is then digested with the alkaline effluent from an alkaline pulping process. The acid solution used may be a waste sulphite effluent, the pH value of which has been reduced to 1 to 1.5 by the addition of an acid or acid salt. Straw and wood are suitable cellulosic materials. In an example, straw is pre-treated with a boiling solution of sodium bisulphate of 1.5 per cent concentration in a ratio 1 : 8, washed and boiled with ten times its amount of wash water of 8 DEG Tw. obtained from a straw boil using 20 per cent caustic soda in a ratio 1 : 4.5. In a second example, straw is pre-treated with boiling sulphite effluent having a density of 12 DEG Tw. and a pH adjusted to 1 to 1.5, and is then boiled with black liquor from a straw pressure boil.
