Abstract
587,863. Sealing pressure and vacuum vessels. VENNER TIME SWITCHES, Ltd., TAUCHERT, E., and KENDON, S. P. Jan. 24, 1945, No. 1930. [Class 8 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] In a method for sealing evacuated and pressure-filled vessels having an apertured wall or extension and in which the seal is effected in a space maintained at the working pressure by means external to the space, the apertured wall only is exposed to the pressure space. A suitable apparatus comprises a chamber 4 into the base 5 of which is screwed an apertured spigot 2 of an evacuated or pressure-filled vessel 1. Through an inwardly directed spigot 13 of the top wall 7 of the chamber 4 extends a handoperated axially slidable rod 9 carrying a detachable tapered closure pin 26 to fit the aperture 3 in the spigot 2. Wedging of the pin 33 in the spigot aperture 3 closes an A.C. circuit to fuse a ring of solder 33 to effect the seal whereupon after cooling, the rod is then withdrawn. In a modification a high frequency A.C. heating coil may be disposed within the chamber 4 to fuse the solder. Furthermore the closure pin 26 may be inserted automatically by supporting the slidable rod 9 against movement by calibrated springs, or by a detent that 'is withdrawn by means operated by or responsive to pressure conditions within the chamber 4.
