Abstract

586,555. Gas turbines. BAUMANN, K., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Dec. 15,' 1941, No. 16190. [Class 110 (iii)] A gas turbine plant which may be used for jet propulsion of aircraft or supercharging an I.C. engine, or, in air-conditioning or refrigerating plant, comprises a contra-rotational air-compressor driven by contra-rotational turbine discs 36, 37 which are axially beyond the compressor. The discs 36, 37 have bladings 34, 35 which pass or further compress the air delivered from the compressor. The combustion chamber is of annular swan-neck form and delivers products of combustion to fixed bladings I which precede the turbine bladings II, III. The exhaust is received by fixed bladings IV. The air-compressor rotors are driven through tubular shafts or sleeves 15, 39 and there is a bearing 43 between the sleeves. In one modification the fixed blading ring IV is omitted and the outer compressor rotor is directly connected to the foundation ring of the blading III. Modifications of the driving sleeve and bearing arrangements are described. In another form an annular combustion chamber, or group of chambers, is interposed between the compressor and the turbine and three arrangements of driving sleeves and bearings are described.
