Abstract
A composition for use in making patterns for moulds for casting metal consists of a mixture of a waxy material, a rubber-like hydrocarbon, and a resin, so that after formation of the mould the composition can be removed by heating. The composition melts between 70 and 80 DEG C., and does not separate into its constituents on melting. The hydrocarbon may be balata or chicle and is present in an amount not exceeding 25 per cent., and preferably about 10 per cent. of the composition. The waxy ingredients and the resin, e.g., cumar or indene resin, which serves as a fluxing-agent, are melted together, the balata &c., preferably comminuted, is stirred in, and the composition is then forced into the pattern in a vacuum, pressure being then applied to eliminate cavities. It is then used as a pattern for the formation of a mould (see Group XXII). According to examples, the composition may comprise mixtures of (1) a hard wax such as vegetable fibre wax, a softer wax such as candelilla, a hydrogenated vegetable oil such as hydrogenated cotton seed oil, a petroleum wax, balata, and cumar resin; (2) hydrogenated castor oil, hydrogenated cotton seed oil, petroleum wax, cumar, and balata; (3) vegetable fibre wax, candelilla, paraffin wax, and chicle.
