Abstract
573,160. Pit-props. MAVOR & COULSON, Ltd., and MAVOR, J. B. July 30, 1943, No. 12395. [Class 20 (ii)] [Also in Group XXX] A pit-prop or jack employs fluid-pressure for rapid adjustment, with pawl and ratchet mechanism for sustaining the load when fluidpressure is withdrawn, means being provided to permit release of the pawl while subject to load. The pit-prop &c. may have a foot, with cylinder B in which works a piston C having a rod D with ratchet-teeth E, the upper part of the rod being fitted with an adjustable screw-head G carrying a freely rotatable pad F. A casing H on the cylinder has a pawl-carrier 4 pivoted at 5, the pawl 6 being pivoted in the carrier and urged to engage the ratchet-teeth E by a spring- plunger 7. The pawl-carrier is retained in operative position by a crank 10 in dead-centre position engaging a roller 11 on the pawlcarrier, the crank shaft having an arm 13 outside the casing H. The pad F is moved into contact with the mine-roof &c. by air pressure applied at A to the cylinder B and is retained by the pawl 6, load being applied by rotation of the screwed head G by a tommy bar. For removal, the .crank arm 13 is struck, thereby releasing the carrier 4 which rocks about its pivot 5 and releases the pawl from the ratchetteeth E.
