[Class 46] In a press for separating liquids from solids, such as oil from nut kernels, comprising an extruding worm rotating in a cage provided with pores or openings for the exuding liquid and adapted to be opened up to give access to the interior, the opening movement is effected in a horizontal direction with the opening parts supported during such movement, for instance by the opening parts being hinged on a vertical axis. As shown in sectional part elevation, Fig. 1, and sectional plan, Fig. 7, a main frame 10 provides bearings 13 for a vertical shaft 16 on which worm flights 17 are fixed to rotate within a cage formed by longitudinally arranged bars 25, which provide openings between themselves for the exudation of expressed liquid and which are assembled in half-ring members 26 hinged on a vertical rod 28 so as to be capable of being swung open in the horizontal direction, to give access to the interior of the cage. The cage is held in the closed position by a U-section clamping bar 31, which is tightened on to co-operating wedge-shaped members on the half-ring members by two hand-wheels 36 and screws 33, the latter having a collar 34 to engage a recess formed in the wedge-shaped members so as to prevent axial movement of the screws. The two hand-wheels are connected by a chain 38 and sprockets 37-for operation together, but one can be declutched by means of a pin 39 so as to allow. independent operation for final tightening. The weight of the clamping bar is taken up by a runner rail 41. The separated liquid passes to a trough 42 having a screen over which pass scrapers 44 to remove any fine solids which may have passed through the exudation openings of the cage. The scrapers are carried by a wheeled member running on the edge of the trough. The bars of the cage are divided at points 27 into a number of axial sections so that after wear a section can be transferred to a preceding axial position, the first section being scrapped and only the last section needing a new' replacement. The extrusion area 49 is varied by means of cone member 49a adjustable through a hand-wheel 49c and gearing 49b. Material is fed from the hopper 23 by a feed worm 24, driven through a ratchet gear 56 from a spring-loaded telescopic connecting rod 57 so that the feed is automatically adjusted in accordance with the pressure. The cake of solid from the extrusion nozzle is swept out from the lower chamber by a rotating arm on the vertical shaft 16. The lubricating oil for the driving gear is kept cool by a fan blowing air on the gear enclosure. The opening movement of the halfring members of the cage may be effected by outward horizontal movement on supporting rails, Figs. 9 and 10 (not shown). Specification 571,046 is referred to.
