Abstract
579,793. Ring spinning machines for flax &c. MACKIE & SONS, Ltd., J., and MACKIE, J. P. March 27, 1944, No. 5626. [Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii)] Flax &c. is wet spun on a machine comprising a stationary ring rail, the spindle rail having both pirning and builder motions applied to it, the spindles being driven, the rings being fixed and of the vertical type and furnished with ear-shaped travellers which move thereon. Flax from roving spools 10, mounted in a suitable creel, is led through a trough of hot water 15 to rollers 18, 19, where drawing is effected, and thence through a guide 20 to the traveller 21. The ring 22, carried by a bracket 27 provided with a drip-channel 28, is fixed, while the spindles 24 are driven by bands 25 from the tin roller. The line of the yarn from the nip of the draw rollers to the ring 21 is such as to reduce drag to a minimum. The pirning motion is produced by a heart-cam 45 rotated by a shaft 48 and gears 47, the cam effecting the oscillation of a lever 50 which, through a chain 54 oscillates a shaft 44 which, in turn, through a further chain 42 reciprocates the spindle rail 31, in a vertical direction, through carrier rods 32. A worm wheel 60 attached to the shaft 44 meshes with a worm 57 on a shaft 58 which carries a ratchet wheel 62, intermittently rotated by a pawl 63 as the pawl contacts a stop 65 during its oscillations, so to lower gradually the spindle rail 31 to produce building. A hand wheel fitted on the shaft 58 enables the builder mechanism to be raised, after the completion of a wind, to allow of doffing. The spindles are driven in groups of four, two on each side of the machine, the common driving band 25 passing around a tension pulley 71 supported by a slide 72 on a rail 73 and weighted at 74. It is stated that when spinning 80s line, the machine may operate at 7,000 r.p.m. and that a bobbin containing 50-100 per cent. more yarn than is usual may be obtained. It is further stated that the rovings 10 may be boiled, preliminarily, to improve the operation of the machine. Specifications 11,280/92, [Class 120], and 579,797 are referred to.
