577,987. Gun recocking devices; cartridges. THOMSON, T., LORIMER, J., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 3, 1943, No. 6940. [Classes 9 (i) and 92 (ii)] The firing-pin 3 of a spigot-mortar or like gun, which is normally cocked against the action of a strong spring 8 by the recoil on firing, is initially cocked or recocked by gas pressure derived from the firing of a separate cartridge 22 in a chamber 15. This chamber leads, by way of a powder trap 18, venturi orifice 20 and pipe 14, to the breechcylinder 1 of the gun, where the gases act on a spring abutment or piston 7 to cock the firing member 5 into engagement with a releasable device 9. The gases escape to the atmosphere through a pipe 30. One form of cartridge, Fig. 7, having perforated rods 50 of double-base smokeless powder is arranged for electric ignition by smokeless powder pellets 35 easily ignited by a bridge-wire 41 and a bead 42 of deflagrating material, the flame from which ignites black powder 37 cemented to the underside of a celluloid cup 36.
