Abstract

562,696. Luminescent materials. TASKER, H. S., and ILFORD, Ltd. Jan. 7, 1943, No. 296. Addition to 540,252. [Class 39 (i)] [Also in Group III] Mixed crystals of lead and barium sulphate for use as a luminescent material are prepared by mixing a reagent (a) containing lead and barium and a reagent (b) capable of reacting to form sulphates either (a) or (b) being in the solid condition and the other reagent being in aqueous solution, the reagent in the solid condition being at least slightly soluble in the aqueous solution. Examples describe the reaction of solid barium hydroxide and lead oxide with sulphuric acid ; of barium and lead carbonates with sulphuric acid ; of a solution of barium and lead nitrates with solid sodium sulphate ; of solid barium and lead nitrates with a solution of ammonium sulphates ; of solid barium and lead chlorides with a solution of ammonium sulphate ; and of mixed crystals of lead and barium sulphite (obtained by the reaction of the nitrates with sodium sulphite) with hydrogen peroxide.
