Abstract
561,569. Piston packing. BALLAMY, L. M., and SHEEPSHANKS, R. H. Nov. 27, 1942, No. 16913. [Classes 110 (ii) and 122 (i)] A packing strip contained in a groove in one of a pair of relatively movable members, e.g. in pistons or vanes of rotary pumps or engines, is grooved longitudinally to form resilient webs 20, 21 co-operating with the bottom of the groove to press the ring outwardly. The grooves may be parallel to the bearing surface, or perpendicular thereto, Fig. 3, in which case the packing is bevelled to engage bevelled groove walls and press outwardly from the groove under the action of the resilient webs 17a. The sealing surface may be provided with one or more grooves 26a to increase bearing pressure and fluid may be admitted to the packing grooves to assist the spring action. A further form provides resilient webs 20b, 21b, Fig. 4, extending inwardly from the bearing portion and co-operating with inclined surfaces 29, 30 on the walls of the groove or with a triangular section ridge integral with or mounted on the groove base.
