Abstract
552,754. Knitting ; camouflage matting. MORTON SUNDOUR FABRICS, Ltd., MORTON, J. W. F., ALLISON, G. L., and BOWKER, E. Nov. 27, 1941, No. 15271. [Class 74 (ii)] [Also in Group X] A fabric in the form of matting suitable for camouflage purposes is made by supplying a sheet A of loosely matted fibres to a warp knitting-machine which forms widely spaced threads into chains of stitches looped around successive small quantities of the fibres. The knitted fabric may comprise a series of knitted pillar warps B associated with stuffer warps C and a supporting weft yarn D which inclines from side to side of the sheet of fibres and is interlaced with the fibres in the knitted loops of the warps B. Two pillar warps may be led to each needle so as to knit a locked stitch. An open-mesh backing fabric may be fed into the machine to form a permanent support for the fibres. The fibres A are fed to the needles 10 by a number of endless bands 12 arranged side by side and the weft D is led forward by chains 15, one arranged at each side of the machine. The pillar warps are supplied to the needles by spaced fingers 24 which have the usual swinging and shogging movements and the stuffer warps C are guided tu the needles by cam grooves 27 by which they are shogged alternately from one side to the other of the corresponding needles. Catches 16 are provided on the chains 15 for positioning the weft D, and a cam 41 is provided for lifting the weft clear of the catches when the weft has been looped into the fabric. Means are provided for narrowing the loops of weft extending at each side of the sheet of fibres. The hooks of the needles may be pointed to facilitate penetration of the fibre sheet.
