[Classes 100 (ii) and 100 (iv)] An embossing-machine which is adapted to reproduce the effects obtained by hand-tooling on leather is constructed with an embossing roller 8a which can be readily secured to a holder 8 on a rod 7 which is depressed into printing position by a cam operated by a lever 13 to bring the roller 8a into operative position with the work which is secured by means of adjustable gauges 43b, 44, Fig. 6, to a worktray 25 which can slide on guides 24a, 24b on a table 22. A counter-roller 16 is driven either by hand or by means of a motor 20, which is adapted to be de-energized by the action of a projection 30 on the tray upon a contact 32. The roller 8a is driven frictionally from the roller 16, which is covered with rubber and is arranged below an aperture 26 in the table so that it engages the work-tray. The pressure of the roller is controlled by a screw 15 which effects relative adjustment between the rod 7 and a tube 6 which slides in a head 5 carried by an arm 3 adjustably secured to an upright rod 2 on a base 1. The roller 8a is normally raised out of action by a spring 10 acting on a collar 11 on the rod 7. The roller 16 is mounted in a bearing 17 on the base 1, and the roller 8a may be heated by a burner supplied by a gas tube 41, or by an electric heater. The embossing foil is fed from a roller 37a and wound upon a roller 37b of slightly greater diameter so as to keep the foil taut, and guide rollers 38a, 386 carried by supports 39a, 39b cause the foil to move substantially tangential to the roller 8a. The rollers 37a, 37b are geared together by means of pulleys 36a, Fig. 1, and 36b Fig. 3 (not shown), which are connected by a slack belt to permit of slip.
