Abstract
559,388. Feeding webs and sheets: set-off, preventing. JONES, K. W. May 3, 1943, No. 6919. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii)] A suction roller feeding device 1 especially adapted for feeding sheets or webs when a printed impression is not dry so as to prevent set-off is revolubly mounted in a suction box S having an opening to expose over a predetermined length and are of the peripheral surface of the roller a predetermined area to which the paper adheres, the interior of the box being in communication with the interior of the roller through perforations in the roller lying within the box. The shaft 3 of the roller is mounted in the end walls 5 of the box, and the inclined sides 7, Fig. 2, are screwed to the bottom 6 and are formed with curved ends which embrace the roller 1 with just sufficient clearance to prevent material inflow of air. In Fig. 3 the sides 9 of the box are vertical and have secured to them curved members 17 which are so close together that the suction acts over a small arc only. In modifications boxes of the shape shown in Figs. 2, 3 are cast in one piece. The rollers may be made with separate compartments so that one roller may deal with webs of different widths, or for a similar purpose part of the periphery of a roller may be masked by steel shields or rubber bands. The device may operate to feed continuously or intermittently, in the latter case imperforated zones may be formed in the roller, or a valve may be provided to connect the suction box intermittently to a suction source, or the roller 1 may be driven intermittently.
