Abstract
556,454. Free-piston compressors and gas generators. PESCARA, R. P. Aug. 1, 1940, No. 12477. Convention date, Aug. 2, 1939. [Class 8 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] A free-piston compressor or gas generator in which the pistons are returned by the pressure of gas in accumulators A', A<SP>2</SP> has controllable means for transferring gas between the accumulators and a source of pressure, the pressure in this source lying between the maximum and minimum pressures in the accumulators during each working cycle. The pistons 2<SP>1</SP> are actuated by internal combustion in a cylinder 1, and are connected to pistons 5<SP>1</SP> compressing air on their inner sides and delivering it to a chamber 9 acting as a source of scavenging air and as the said source of pressure. The fuel supply pump is actuated by the synchronizing pinion 10. When the mean pressure in the accumulator A<SP>1</SP> varies, the valve 31 opened by the piston at a point of its stroke communicates this variation to a cylinder 25 and so varies the position of a cam 28, and moves a valve 30 into communication with one of two ports 116<SP>2</SP> leading to chambers having valves which respectively allow passage of air to the accumulators from the scavenge space 9 and vice versa. The regulation of the fuel pump is controlled from the governor of a turbine supplied by the generator through a link 14, and in case of rapid change of load this link acts on an abutment 33 to give an immediate shift to the valve 30. A lever 39 also acts on release and supply valves in the passage leading to the accumulators. In a modification, some of the parts are omitted, the transfer valve 30 is replaced by valve chambers such as 115<SP>2</SP> caused to slide in a chamber in the transfer pipe, and the valve 31 is replaced by a restriction in the rod extending upwards from the piston 5<SP>1</SP>, this restriction cooperating with a pipe, leading to cylinder 25, through which the rod passes transversely.
