Abstract

555,984. Tanks. FIREPROOF TANKS, Ltd.. TILTMAN, A. H., DANIELS, L. S., and LANGLEY, M. March 10, 1942, No. 3170. [Class 69 (i)] A tank for petrol or other liquids for use in vehicles, particularly aircraft, consists essentially of a flexible container and a rigid or comparatively rigid top cover which carries the accessories. As shown, in a tank adapted to be fitted into an aeroplane wing, the tank comprises a flexible container 1 and a rigid top plate 2, the container 1 comprising an inner layer of tailored fabric and a self-sealing covering comprising layers of rubber or rubber-like sheets and fabric or wire woven cloth, the fabric lining being petrol-proofed on its inner surface as in Specification 555,173. Alternatively, the inner lining may be a moulding of synthetic rubber. The container 1 has an inwardly extending flange 1a clamped beneath the top plate 2 by bolts passing through channel-sections 3 and a frame 5 riveted to the plate 2 ; the frame 5 at its rear is of shallow channel section, and at its sides and front has upstanding flanges secured to a metal plate 7 adapted to form part of the top cover of the wing, the plate 7 being further supported by stringers 8 and flanges 9. Accessories carried by the plate 2 include means 10 for actuating a contents gauge, a siphon jettison valve 11, a filler nozzle 13 beneath a hinged transparent door 14, a pressure filling pipe 15, a tank vent pipe 16, an engine supply pipe 17, a radio interference suppressor 20, and an electrically operated fuel pump 18 drawing liquid from a non-metallic sump 19 of hard rubber, synthetic rubber or resin &c. which may be fixed between the layers of the container 1 or moulded in the inner layer when this is formed of moulded synthetic rubber. A transparent cover 22 is provided in the plate 7, and the top plate 2 carries baffles 23, of sheet metal, vulcanized fibre or synthetic resin, which do not contact the container 1. A self sealing cover of rubber or felt may be applied to the top plate 2.
