Abstract

542,846. Milk preparations. BURGESS ZEOLITE CO. Ltd. Sept. 16, 1940, No. 14256. Convention date, Sept. 14, 1939. [Class 49] The calcium content of whole milk, skimmed milk, buttermilk or whey is reduced by treatment with an organic cation-exchange material. Suitable exchange materials include those obtained by treating fossil carbonaceous materials or carbonized carbohydrates with acid or other dyhdrating agent, those obtained from polyhydric phenolic materials, such as tannins, and phenolformaldehyde resins. The exchange material is regenerated by means of solutions of sodium. potassium or ammonium salts. Or it may be in part regenerated by acid in order to adjust the ocidity of the treated product. This adjustment may also be made by contacting the liquid successively with alkali-exchange and hydrogen-exchange material or by the addition of lactic or other acid or of an acid-producing culture to the product. The product may be pasteurized, sterilized or homogenized or the treatment may be carried out at pasteurizing or sterilizing temperature. When the liquid is passed through a bed of the exchange material, the latter may be sterilized before regeneration by means of steam or other sterilizing agent.
