538,600. Splints. HAYNES, H. H. Feb. 3, 1940, No. 2165. Convention date, Feb. 4, 1939. [Class 81(ii)] Apparatus for holding the broken ends of fractured bones in position comprises a pair of base blocks 3 (Fig. 3) secured to the bone by means of skeletal screw pins 4 and extensible rods 9, which rigidly connect the two base blocks. The latter carry balls 8, and are fixed to the screw pins 4 by set screws 6. The balls 8 engage sockets in the enlarged ends of the extensible rods and are secured therein by means of screws 22. To enable the total length of the extensible rod to be varied, one portion is hollow so that the remaining portion can be telescoped into it, and fixation is effected by means of screw thimble 16 and slotted sleeve 11. The ball and socket joints enable the base blocks to be rigidly connected even when they are not in alignment and the base block shown in Fig. 4 is intended for use in extreme cases when the blocks cannot be fixed in approximate alignment.
