Abstract

538,318. Stuffing-boxes. PETCH, H. F. Jan. 27, 1940, No. 1715. [Class 122 (v)] In an oil seal comprising a metal ring casing 19, Fig. 2, an angle sealing element 18 of leather, rubber, &c. under spring pressure, the seal 18 has at its lip 21 a return flap 22 re-entering the casing 19 to protect the spring 24 and other parts within the casing. The flap recess is formed by a wall 17 on the casing 19 which may have a groove 26 and chamfer 27 to grip the seal 18. The assembly is secured by an angle 12 spun over at 20 or by screwing the casing 19 into the housing 11. In another form, the seal 18 is vulcanized to the casing 19. The flap 22 may be loose in its recess or may be clamped. The spring 24 may be a helical metal spring, a rubber ring, or a steel ring with a flared crown of spring teeth. In a modification, apertures to the seal and casing admit inflation pressure to the cavity 23 and the separate spring is dispensed with. The oil seal may be combined with a plain or a thrust bearing, and two seals may be placed together in the same or opposite directions. Thus, two seals 110, 111, Fig. 10, are secured by clamping rings 113 ... 115 held together by an angled casing 116 and forming a lubricant chamber 118 fed under pressure from a passage 119 to the housing 117. Ring 114 has a groove 120 and radial passages 121 leading to chamber 118 and oil holes 122 in the hollow shaft 112.
