Abstract

523,860. Regulating fuel pumps. C.A.V., Ltd., and EDWARDS. C. L..Tan. 17, 1939, No. 1559. [Class 102 (i)] [Also in Groups XXVII, XXIX and XXXVIII] The fuel pump of an internal-combustion engine, or of a number of such engines, e.g. in a train of rail coaches, are actuated in stages by a number of electromagnetic means each adapted to give a predetermined amount of movement to the controls as energized by a switch operated by the driver. The Fig. shows a control rod d of an engine connected by a link c and arm b to a shaft a, which is rotated in stages by solenoids f ... f<SP>3</SP>, the plungers g of which are connected by links and arms e ... e<SP>3</SP> to the shaft a. The gaps h between the plungers g and fixed cores i of the solenoids vary in width as shown, the widest being in the solenoid f<SP>3</SP> which moves the control d to the full-supply position. The other plungers have lost-motion slots m in their connections. Where there are several engines controlled from the one switch, the corresponding solenoids of each engine are connected up in parallel. A spring n or a weight is arranged to return the shaft a when the solenoids are deenergized.
