Abstract

521,601. Ventilators. KURTH, F. J. Nov. 18, 1938, No. 33642. Convention date, Nov. 23, 1937. [Class 137] In an air distributing device of the kind comprising a number of successively larger hollow flaring members open at their ends and having their smaller ends facing the air inlet, and so disposed as to provide a number of flaring passageways, one at least of the flaring members has different -portions of its smaller end spaced at different distances from the smaller end of the next adjacent member to cause differences of air flow through different portions. These differences of air flow, apart from being directional, are inwardly and outwardly through the flared passageways. Air from a conduit 10 passes through an opening 8 of semi-circular shape pivoted with the flaring members 1 to 5 between air passages a to f, vertical and horizontal plates 6, 7 bounding these passages. The lowermost part of the inner end of member 5 is in the same horizontal plane as the lowermost part of the opening 8 but as the member extends upwardly to either side of the'medial vertical plane of the device it .extends inwardly to overlap the opening (as shown at 11 in Fig. 4). Thus air flows across the lower portion of the passage f through which air is drawn in, and out through the upper portion of this passage. The members 2, 3 and 4 are arranged so that some air is distributed outwardly and some air is drawn in as shown by the arrows, but the proportion of that passing outwardly increases from the lower and medial zones to the outer and upper zones which are remoter from the medial vertical plane. The member 1 is so arranged that air passes outwardly only through the passage a. The general effect is that within the medial zone, the air flow is primarily outward at the top and inward at the bottom, and gradually lesser inwardly and greater outwardly from the bottom towards the top. At each side at the top the air flow is primarily outward, but the outward flow decreases as the medial vertical plane is approached. By this arrangement, a person standing beneath or directly forwardly, or to either side, does not experience a sensation of draught.
