Abstract
529,262. Levulinic acid. CORN PRODUCTS REFINING CO. May 25, 1939, No. 15594. Convention date, Aug. 18, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] In the process of making levulinic acid by heating a solution containing a hexose sugar with a dilute mineral acid, such as phosphoric, sulphuric or hydrochloric acid, improved yields of levulinic acid are obtained by adding sodium chloride to the solution, either separately or together with the hexose. The hexose may be in the form of hydrol, the mother liquor retained from the crystallization of dextrose ; this liquor already contains sodium chloride. The mixture is heated, and the water, formic acid and the mineral acid, if volatile, are distilled off ; the residue is then distilled under reduced pressure to isolate the levulinic acid. The hexose is preferably added slowly to the heated solution containing the mineral acid. An example of the preparation of levulinic acid from hydrol is given.
