Abstract

513,468. Air-raid shelters; panels. STENT PRECAST CONCRETE, Ltd., and STENT, D. H. March 5, 1938, No. 6939. [Classes 20 (i) and 87 (i)] An air-raid shelter is constructed from precast concrete plates with inwardly turned edges forming flanges through which the connecting bolts are passed. The plates 1 are provided with edge flanges 5, 6, and may be curved at their upper portions to form semi - arched members which can be joined at their upper abutting edges to constitute an arched shelter. The plates may be stiffened by transverse ribs 8 and the upper joint may be sealed. Floor plates 13 are provided for the base of the shelter. In a modificatlion, the arched plates on one side of the shelter are replaced by flat plates with stiffening flanges. In a further modification, as shown in Fig. 7, three sets of flanged plates are used; these comprise flat plates 60, others 71 with turned over upper portions, and separate roof plates 63 with bent over portions 66; the side plates and roof plates are so disposed that the joints 81 of the roof plates to the side plates are staggered as shown by the heavy lines. The side plates engage at their lower edges in grooves 82 in a floor block and the flanged edges of the plates may be provided with sealing grooves 75, 76 into which slurry can be run. Access to the shelter is provided by steps 28 leading to a narrow passage and an air lock chamber 31, and an emergency exit 37 provided with a ladder 39 in a manhole having a gas tight cover is also provided. Air filtration plant 49, lavatory accommodation 34, hand pumps 47 for the drainage sumps 46 and seats 55 are also provided.
