Abstract

508,671. Cellulose from seaweed. DILLON, T., FLOOD,D. T., BARRY, V. C., and O'MUINEACAIN, P. Jan. 20, 1938,. No. 6819/39. Convention date; May 5, 1937. Divided out of 508,715. [Class 2 (ii)] Pulp for making wall-board, paper-board; cardboard, papier mÔchÚ, or paper is obtained by-digesting seaweed with an aqueous solution of acid, separating. the liquor, disintegrating the residual weed and mixing it with straw pulp, wood pulp or other fibrous material, and then subjecting the mixture to an alkaline treatment. This treatment may consist of heating the fibrous material in an aqueous suspension with milk of lime, forming insoluble calcium derivatives which act as binding agents, and also liberating amines ; or the fibrous material may be heated with an alkali such as soda whereby soluble alkali derivatives are formed, and these-may be precipitated in the fibres to act as binders by the addition of acid or a soluble aluminium salt such as aluminium sulphate. If desired, the weed may be fermented or retted before the digestion with acid.
