Abstract
506,845. Vehicle bodies; ventilating vehicles ; cooling motors. VOIGT, C. A. Jan. 25, 1938, No. 2401. Convention date, Jan. 25, 1937. [Class 108 (i)] [Also in Groups X and XXXI] The body of a power vehicle comprises two or more independent units or cells spaced by an air gap or gaps arranged or constructed to enable air streams caused by the. motion of the vehide to enter or leave by the gap or gaps, and to be used for ventilation, hooting, cooling, braking, aerodynamic equalization, &c. purposes. As shown in Fig 2 three units A, B, C are connected by a beam 1 and air flows through, and is heated by, a channel 5 of increasing cross-section in the motor-carrying unit A, through a flexible connection 4 and pipe 16 into unit B and thence through It nozzle-shaped outlet 6. A regulatable opening 3 in pipe 16 permits the inlet of atmospheric air or the exit of superfluous heated air. In modification (a) only the unit B is provided with openings, at each end, regulatable by pivoted flaps; (b) the units A, B are combined and a cooler provided in the space separating the unit C ; (c) air is sucked out from unit A, Fig. 4, and flows into unit C through openings like those in a venetian blind, and the ends of the walls of the air-flow spaces extend at acute angles to the external surface of the vehicle; (d) the rear wall 8. Figs. 5, 6 of unit A pivots about a hinge 9, the engine cylinder-heads 10 project into the front air gap, an air-dividing guide-strip 11 is provided on the front wall of unit C, and guiding flanges 12 on thesides of unit B; (e) the entrance of air may be facilitated by the provision of recesses in one unit opposite side openings in an adjacent unit. or the openings may be in projecting parts of the units ; (d) devices for measuring the velocity of the air may be provided in the air spaces and may be connected with air-resistance or speed indicators, or with the brakes, or with vacuum or other signals.
