Abstract

492,888. Explosives. VEROLA, P., and BARON, C. Jan. 28, 1937, No. 2516. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 29, 1937.] [Class 9 (ii)] An explosive consisting ofametal (aluminium, magnesium, and the like) and an oxidizing- agent (nitrate, chlorate, or perchlorate of ammonia and the like) has at least the metallic particles coated before mixing with a mineral pitch melting at about 70‹ C. This pitch is the residue after distillation of petroleum oil which is not continued as far as the formation of coke. The oxidizing-agent may also be coated and this coating may consist of the aforesaid mineral pitch or may itself be an oxidizing-agent. According to one method of preparing the explosive, both constituents are coated and then sifted. The constituents are then mixed in the right proportions and then homogeneity is ensured by sifting again. According to one example, powdered magnesium is coated with the mineral pitch and ammonium nitrate is coated with a mixture of nitroglycerine and guncotton, the final composition being : nitroglycerine 7À5 per cent, magnesium 8À5 per cent, mineral pitch 3À5 per cent, guncotton 0À5 per cent, and ammonium nitrate 80 per cent. According to a further example, aluminium and ammonium perchlorate are both coated with the mineral pitch, the final composition being ammonium perchlorate 80 per cent, aluminium 16 per cent, and mineral pitch 4 per cent. If desired, cheap materials, such as sodium chloride or sodium or ammonium nitrate may be incorporated.
