Abstract

Ammonia gas given off during the fermentation of fish offal with seaweed by the action of thermophile bacteria in the production of a foodstuff for animals is recovered as a byeproduct as sulphate of ammonia.ALSO:A pre-digested and dehydrated food for animals containing iodine in organic combination is made by subjecting fish offal and seaweed to the action of thermophilic bacteria at such temperatures and for a period which will effect pre-digestion and partial dehydration of the mass and the organic combination therewith of iodine from the seaweed. In an example, fish offal is mixed with macerated seaweed of the laminaria digitala type, introduced into a chamber, and sprayed with bacterial fluid containing both anaerobic and aerobic bacteria. The chamber is then sealed and anaerobic fermentation is allowed to continue for about ten days. Air or oxygen is then admitted and aerobic fermentation takes place, the temperature being allowed to rise to 75-80 DEG C. to destroy the putrefactive organisms and to dehydrate the mass. The thermophilic bacteria may be pure cultures or a bacterial liquid such as cow urine may be used. The alkalinity of the mass for fermentation is controlled by the addition of calcium carbonate.
