Abstract

467,022. Rotary compressors. NICHOLS, T. W. Dec. 9, 1935, Nos. 34031/35 and 6992/36. [Class 110 (ii)] Means for impelling cooling water or air through the rotor b and /or around the casing a of a rotary compressor or pump, comprises one or more pumps in the end cover or covers of the rotary machine. In the Figure, a gear pump d, e, is driven by the shaft c and is supplied with cooling fluid from an inlet g via ports j<1>, j<2>, and a chamber k to the pump inlet (not shown). Part of the incoming fluid flows around the casing a to an outlet h. A further shaft f may be provided to drive a lubricating device. The gear pump delivers its fluid to a recess m, thence to passages n, p, q, r, s, t, u. The passages r, s, t, are arranged in each segment of the rotor, in the case of an outwardly-sliding vane pump. Grooves v in the shaft c lead the fluid to a recess w which supplies an impeller x. The fluid then leaves the machine through passages y<1>, y<2>, h, or may be led to the gear pump inlet. Packing rings z<1> under pressure of bellows, seal the water spaces from the bearings. In a modified arrangement, another type of pump is used in one end cover, and a tube having radial holes diffuses the cooling fluid to the casing jacket. The invention is applicable to rotary compressors or pumps other than the sliding vane types.
