Abstract
Artificial filaments, yarns, and like textile materials having a basis of an organic derivative of cellulose, containing at least 40 per cent on the weight of the cellulose derivative of a plasticizer compatible therewith in high proportions, and containing substantially no volatile softening agent, are subjected to stretching at temperatures of at least 50 DEG C. The plasticizers used are compatible in proportions of the order of at least 50 per cent of the weight of the cellulose derivative. The materials treated may be of cellulose acetate, formate, propionate, butyrate, nitro-acetate, or other cellulose ester, methyl, ethyl, or butyl cellulose, or other cellulose ether, ethyl cellulose acetate, oxyethyl cellulose acetate, or other cellulose ether-ester. Specified plasticizers are dibutyl, diamyl or other tartrate ester, di-methyl or ethyl phthalate, di-methyl or ethyl glycol phthalate, dibutyl glycol phthalate, triethyl citrate, cresyl glyceryl diacetate, methyl cyclohexanyl oxalate, benzyl benzoate, triacetin, triphenyl acetin, p-toluene sulphon-amide, the isomeric xylene sulphonamides, and other aromatic sulphonamides, and benzyl alcohol. The plasticizer may be incorporated in the spinning solution. The filaments may be obtained by dry or wet spinning methods. The proportion of plasticizer in the materials to be stretched may be 40-100 per cent or more based on the weight of cellulose derivative. The materials may be stretched in the form of hanks or other packages, or while travelling from bobbin to bobbin, or from the spinning apparatus to a winding device. They may be stretched while arranged in parallel alignment. Stretching may take place in one or more stages. The materials may be passed through a vessel containing air, or other gas or vapour at raised temperature and at normal or raised pressure, or they may be passed through a hot liquid. The plasticizer may be removed during or after the stretching operation by treatment with alcohols, benzene, toluene, carbon tetrachloride, dichlorethylene, diethyl ether, or di-isopropyl ether, or by water or aqueous solutions of alcohols after the stretching. In an example, cellulose acetate yarns containing dibutyl tartrate in high proportion are led from bobbins through a reed and while in warp formation are stretched while passing through a vessel containing hot air. The plasticizer is then removed by treatment with a hydrocarbon solvent.
