Abstract

A cigarette is made with a tobacco filler of substantially constant density, and of substantially constant cross-section, throughout its length, by compressing the tobacco axially of the filler. A continuous cigarette rod is formed by showering tobacco on to a moving surface which carries the tobacco stream on to a slower-moving conveyer, so that the retarding of the stream occasions the axial compression, for example as described in Specification 440,182. As the tobacco is compacted axially, the majority of the strands are brought to lie transversely of the cigarette.
