Abstract

449,602. Tempering glass. PERRY, H., Sononama, Airdale Road, Stone, Staffordshire, and GROTEFELD, A. W., 82, Tixall Road, Stafford. Oct. 3, 1934, Nos. 28259/34, 15951/35, and 16181/35. [Class 56] [See also Group XXIX] In a process for tempering glass sheets, the cooling medium comprises an aqueous liquid in a fine state of division. Preferably, water is used and it is sprayed on to the hot glass by means of high pressure jets of air. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a sheet of glass is suspended in a furnace 15 from a carriage running on a rail 22 and when sufficiently heated is moved endwise, by operation of an endless band 98, into the cooling apparatus 16 where it is sprayed on both sides by nozzles 64, Fig. 2, mounted on a frame 49 reciprocated horizontally by crank mechanism so as to distribute the water uniformly over the glass. The sheet may be steadied by wire rods 93 supported one on either side of the sheet near its lower edge. The sprayer comprises a tube 65, Fig. 6, supplied with air under pressure through a cock 67, and furnished with a head 75 having an inturned frusto-conical end 76 and a central aperture through which extends an adjustable nozzle 74 communicating with a water supply through a flexible tube. The air passes to the central aperture through two ducts 79, and additional holes 82 produce air jets at an angle so as to give the spray a transversely elongated form. Specification 449,864 is referred to.
