Abstract

444,322. Safety wheels for motorcycles. LORANT, A., 5, Zimmermannplatz, Vienna. Sept. 18, 1934, No. 26769. [Class 136 (i)] Safety wheels for preventing the overturning of motor-cycles are mounted in side supports which are pivoted in or near the central longitudinal plane of the cycle, and either of which is adapted to be swung out automatically by the impact of a sliding weight when the cycle tilts beyond a predetermined angle, so as to bring the safety wheel into the required groundengaging position. The safety wheels 3 are mounted in side supports 4, the upper ends of which are forked (Fig. 5) to provide spaced pivotal attachments to a carrier 2, which is pivoted at 9 to the upper bar 1 of the cycle frame, whereby the carrier and side supports may be swung upwards and forwards into an inoperative position. On dangerous tilting of the cycle, the corresponding support 4 is swung outwards (Fig. 4) by the impact of a a weight 7 against a rearward extension 8 on the support, the weight 7 sliding in a guide 6. The weight 7 may consist of a shell enclosing a hollow lead body, which is partly filled with mercury so as to increase the suddenness of the impact. The centres of gravity of the safety wheels and their supports are disposed in the transverse plane passing through the centre of gravity of the cycle and its rider. The supports 4 are interconnected by a chain, coil spring, or rubber band 16, which in the raised position of the carrier 2 is bowed and tensioned by engagement with the frame tubes 5, so as to prevent the supports 4 from swinging outwards. The carrier 2 is raised about the pivot 9 by means of a hand lever and a rod 10, and is held in the raised or lowered position by a spring-urged bolt 14, which engages apertures in an arcuate member 15 and is controlled by a Bowden cable 13 and a lever adjacent to such hand lever.
