Abstract
435,833. Burnishing gear teeth. GLEASON WORKS, 1000, University Avenue, Rochester, New York, U.S.A. Nov. 6, 1934, No. 31880. Convention date, Feb. 15. [Class 60] [See also Group XXII] In a method of and apparatus for cutting gears, particularly form-cut bevel or hypoid gears having longitudinally curved teeth, progressively deeper cuts are taken down the sides of a tooth and then final finishing cuts are taken along the full height of the teeth to produce the final tooth-space form. In one form of cutter, Fig. 1, the cutter body 26 is fitted with a number of roughing blades 271 ... 27<26> of progressively increasing height followed by a number of alternately arranged finishing blades 28<1>-28<4> preferably spaced so that no two blades are cutting simultaneously, on the same side of a tooth space. Between the last finishing blade 28' and the first stocking out blade 27<1> is a gap 32 of sufficient width to permit indexing while the blank is opposite this space without interrupting the cutter rotation or withdrawing the blank from the cutter. In some cases the finishing blades may be followed by one or more burnishing blades, Fig. 23, having rounded burnishing surfaces 132, 133 which act on opposite sides of the tooth space. A recess 120 is provided in the cutter so that the work G may be removed from its arbor 122 without withdrawing the work from the tool.
