Abstract

421,442. Rotary compressors; stuffing-boxes. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(General Motors Corporation; Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A.) May 5, 1934, No. 13674. [Classes 110 (ii) and 122 (v)] A compressor, for super-charging internal-combustion engines or other purposes, comprises two rotors 1, 2, each with at least three lobes 3, in which the lobes are arranged helically along their axes such that the angular displacement of a rotor cross-section from end to end is equal to half the angle subtended between centre lines of two adjacent lobes. Clearances are provided between meshing rotors and the casing walls. The rotors are driven by helical gears 26-29, whose end thrusts balance, at each end of the blower. These gears are secured on bushes 22 by studs 41 and dowel pins, which are held by locking plates 40. The rotors are pinned to stub shafts 9 by cross-pins 12. The housing is bored eccentrically to the centre line of the rotor shafts so as to allow more clearance on the intake side than on the delivery side when the housing has an even temperature throughout. This is stated to correct casing distortion caused by dissimilar temperatures in the two sides. A water jacket 19 is provided. Inlet and outlet ports 16, 17 have widths equal to the distance between shaft centres. Thrust collars 30 carry carbon packing rings 46 which are pressed laterally by steel rings 49 attached to phosphor bronze diaphragms 48 held by stationary rings 47. The rotors and housing are made of materials with different coefficients of expansion. Cast iron may be used for the rotors and aluminium for the housing. Gears 33, 341 and a cam 36 drive a petrol pump. The end cover plate 42 is provided with an air vent 43. The lobes 3 have small drain holes 51.
