[Classes 20 (iv) and 87 (i).] A building slab for a wall, floor or roof comprises a steel frame 1, which encloses an insulating filling 2 such as wood wool and cement, and projects so far beyond the surface of the filling or a layer of plaster 3 thereon as to permit a welding operation for connecting adjacent slabs to be effected at the projecting ledges 4 of the frame without affecting the filling or the plaster layer 3. The projecting ledges 4 may be formed to provide a V-shaped recess to accommodate the welding seam 5, and they may be bent to a curved formation as shown in Fig. 2 or at right angles as shown in Fig. 6. After welding, the joints are covered by an insulating material. For example, the edges may be embedded in concrete or asphalt 8 covered by brass or iron bars, which may be arranged as shown at 9 in Fig. 6 or be clipped over the curved edges of the frame as shown at 10 in Fig. 2. Alternatively, the edges 4 may extend outwardly in contact as shown in Fig. 5, and a felt strip 6 may be clamped in position by a bar 7. If desired, on the inner side of the building, the space between the bent edges 4 and the bar 10 may be adapted to accommodate electric wiring 11 or gas or water pipes as shown in Fig. 2. The cross-section of the frame members is such as to provide hollow spaces between the slabs. For walls and roofs, the ledges 4 project beyond both surfaces of the filling, and to facilitate draining of the roof, the roof slabs are provided with thickened edges 14<1> as shown in Fig. 4. For floors, the ledges 4 project only beyond the lower surface of the slabs. To permit a window or door to be fitted in a slab without the provision of special frames, the vertical frame members of the slab are provided with a stepped formation 12, 13 as shown in Fig. 1, and similar transverse members are provided for bordering the opening. The filling 2 may be cast into the steel frames 1, or the frames may be provided around previouslycast filler slabs which may be in one or more layers.
