Abstract

[Class 145 (ii).] A portable saw for tree felling, cross-cutting, &c. comprises end plates 2, Fig. 1, preferably of aluminium, connected by a guide bar 8 for the cutter which comprises a chain 1 or band saw and is driven by two electric motors 3, one mounted on each end plate. The bar 8 extends right up to the sprockets 7, and its edges may be provided with steel balls or discs to minimise friction. The bar 8 is attached to the plates 2 by bolts 10 and is slotted at 19 to permit tensioning of the cutter, which is effected by a screw 22 mounted in a bracket on the bar and bearing against the end member. The end members 2 each carry one or more handles 15 preferably of aluminium, and are slotted to form grips 18. The sprockets 7 may be driven through reduction or other gearing. In a modification, Fig. 4, the end plates 2 are connected by a bar 11 which does not act as a guide for the cutters ; sprockets may be freely mounted between the runs of the chain to support the cutting run. Tensioning of the cutter is effected by a screw 22 mounted on one end plate 2 and bearing against the bar 11 which is slotted at 24. The saw may be supported during the cut by a suitable frame, or may be mounted on the work. The saw may be mounted upon a frame for use as a stationary sawing machine.
