[Class 52 (ii).] The reclining surface 2 of a bed is adjustably mounted upon a supporting-frame 1 and is transversely divided into four sections 8, 6, 9, 11. The back-rest section 6 is pivoted at 5 to the head section 8 and at 7 to a supporting bracket 18. The leg-rest section 9 is hinged to the foot-rest section 11 and is connected to the back rest section 6 by the pivot 4 which permits longitudinal displacement. The section 6 is adjusted by means of a braking-device, Fig. 7, on each side of the bed and operated by a handle 27. This device comprises a rod 16 moving in a casing 17 and through a locking member which is retracted by rotation of a screw-threaded member 21 to grip the rod 16. The head-rest section 8 is adjustably inclined to the back rest section 6 by the toothed arm 32, releasably engaging a pin 35, and held in engagement by a spring. The leg section 9 is supported on both sides of the bed by a pair of levers 42, 43 hinged together and to the supporting-frame 1 by cross-rods at 44, 10 respectively. A strut 48 hinged to the rod 44 engages stops on the frame 1. The footrest section 11 has fixed thereto a bracket 14 at the end of which is a wheel which runs on the frame 1, and a hinged depending arm engaging ratchet teeth 54 permits adjustable inclination of the section. By releasing the braking-device the occupant of the bed may tilt the fixed portions relative to the fulcrum 7, and the adjustment of the separate sections 8, 6, 9 and 11 may be obtained by movement of the pawl and ratchet arms or catches.
