[Class 83 (iii).] Relates to an attachment for metal-working lathes, such as multispindle or single-spindle lathes, chucking-machines, or hand turret lathes, for cutting a groove or slot in the face of the work-piece, for example before it is cut from the stock. In the multispindle machine shown, a housing 10 is adjustably bolted to the sliding tool carrier 2. A spindle 7 mounted in bearings in the housing is rotated at the same speed and in the same direction as the work spindle 4. The spindle 7 has an enlarged head 71 which rotates within an eccentric ring 14 secured to the housing 10. A slide 15 mounted transversely of the head 7<1> carries at each end a roll 161 adapted to engage the ring 14. Slotting cutters 17, 17<1> are secured to the slide. Rotation of the spindle 7 causes the slide 15 to reciprocate within the head 7<1>, imparting their cutting stroke to the cutters 17, 17<1>. In operation, after drilling or other work has been performed on the work-piece, the latter is brought into alignment with the slotting attachment. The tool slide 2 is then advanced by its cam while the cutters 17, 17<1> operate on the work-piece. More than two slotting cutters may be carried by slides suitably arranged in the head 7<1>. The position of the slotting attachment relatively to the centre of the work-piece is adjustable by means of tapered gibs. The casing 10 comprises an oil reservoir 25 for the bearings of the spindle 7.
