Abstract

376,815. Exhaust silencers. HEATHER, F., 38, Greenford Road, Sudbury Hill, Harrow, Middlesex. April 14, 1931, No. 11031. [Class 7 (ii).] The silencer, which may be used for induced or exhausted gaseous currents, consists of a nest of tubes a .. d of progressively increasing transverse dimensions, each tube being secured to and eccentrically arranged within a tube of - larger dimensions. Each tube has an opening or series of openings m . . p so arranged that the gas entering the inner tube a flows in a unidirectional and roughly spiral path to the outlet openings p over which a deflector q is arranged. The tubes are secured to one another, and the covers r, h to the outer tube d, by welding, but riveting or bolting may be adopted. A deflecting cone prevents the gases impinging on the cover h. In a modification, the tube d is replaced by a casing having an axial outlet. In a further modifica- ,tion, Fig. 4, two such silencers v, ware enclosed in a casing 6, the inner ends of the tubes being separated by a partition 5. Gases entering tube 1 flow outwardly through silencer v and inwardly through silencer w and issue through the smallest tube 4 thereof. In a still further .modification the construction is similar to that shown in Fig. 4, but gases enter each of the smaller tubes axially, flow outwardly, and are discharged through an outlet in one of the end covers.
