Abstract

<PICT:0368091/III/1> <PICT:0368091/III/2> <PICT:0368091/III/3> <PICT:0368091/III/4> <PICT:0368091/III/5> Electrostatic apparatus for the separation of suspended particles in a fluid consists of a plurality of discharge electrodes and a plurality of rotating collecting electrodes so arranged that the rotatable electrodes pass through a zone in which the electrostatic field is removed or reduced to facilitate the removal of dust therefrom. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the discharge electrodes 2 are suspended between disc-like collecting electrodes 3 which are rotated about the axis 5. The gas stream flows across the faces of the discs and at rightangles to the electrodes 2, which are not adjacent to the lower parts 6 of the electrodes 3, thus allowing the dust to fall into the hopper 7. Scrapers 8 may also be provided. A modification is shown in Fig. 4, in which the discharge electrodes 2 consist of two series of arched strips. In both these arrangements, the direction and speed of rotation of the discs 3 may be altered so that the speed of the gas stream in relation to the electrodes may be high or low depending upon the ease or difficulty with which the particles are separated. As shown in Fig. 7 the collecting electrodes consist of concentric cylinders 3, having fixed discharge electrodes 2 between their surfaces, which rotate about the pivot 10. The discharge electrodes are omitted from a portion of the periphery of each cylinder, leaving a space 11 wherein the dust falls readily into a suitable hopper underneath. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 9, the collecting electrodes consist of tubes 3 each having a central discharge electrode 2 fixed in relation to the tubes 3, and the whole system is rotated about the axis 13. The current to the discharge electrodes is supplied through a contact strip 14 (see Fig. 10), so that the discharge electrodes passing across the segment 15 are not supplied with current, thus allowing the dust on the collecting electrodes to fall into a hopper 16 arranged below. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) also describes an arrangement in which the collecting electrodes consisting of two endless travelling bands arranged on opposite sides of the gas conduit and having a series of discharge electrodes arranged between them. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
